A Day at the Races at Santa Anita Park

Santa Anita Park had long been one of those places that I’d wanted to go to but somehow never visited. One reason was that I had never been to a horse race before and…well…I was curious. The other was that I’d long heard it was an Art Deco gem. Built in 1934 it still retained the charm of that era. I knew I had to see it.

Lucky for me, I was invited to spend a day at the races courtesy of America’s Best Racing, a group that’s devoted to raising awareness of thoroughbred horse racing.

As you can see, it was the perfect day to visit. The weather was warm and sunny and there was not a trace of smog which offered an amazing view of the mountains.

Just lovely.

We then settled in our boxes, grabbed a drink and a bite to eat, and enjoyed the thoroughbred races.

We weren’t as far back as it seems in the photos but still I wanted a closer look so I went down to railing.

I also couldn’t help but glance back at the stands.

Before I knew it, it wast time to leave as I wanted to beat the traffic home (I didn’t). But as I was leaving I was treated to this.

Now I know this is standard practice but for a newbie like me it was something special to see the horses and jockeys up close.

I’m so glad I finally made it to Santa Anita. What a local treasure! I’ll definitely be heading back.
