Aw Shucks! Eating Oysters at Shuck Oyster Bar

So when I told you about my happy hour outing at We Olive last week I didn’t tell you the whole story. See, after we had the wine and the nuts and the cheese platter my friend and I decided to walk around SoCo a bit. When we came across Shuck Oyster Bar my friend suggested giving it a whirl. Never one to turn down trying a new restaurant I agreed.
Now here’s the thing. Prior to this visit, I had never eaten an oyster before. They never appealed to me. I’m not the biggest shellfish fan and once had a bad run in with mussels. And this video certainly didn’t help.

But, I’m an adult and decided I wasn’t going to let Mr. Bean get to me. I would be trying oysters.

The only thing was…that is a huge menu! How on earth were we going to pick what to have? Well, we were in luck because Shuck Oyster Bar is prepared for visitors just like us. The shuckers who assist diners are experts in everything oyster. We told ours that we were novices so he proceeded to teach us everything about this amazing mollusk. He answered all of our questions thoroughly and provided us a sampling to try.
These oysters came from both the East and West Coast and ranged from sweet to briny. It was interesting to sample them and taste the difference between varieties. The sweet one I loved…the briny one tasted like I had stayed at the beach too long. But that’s just my personal preference.
Oh and there were also condiments for us to use – hot sauce, horseradish, and a vinger with onions and cucumbers. The vinegar was AMAZING. I could have poured it on any dish.
And not liking oysters isn’t a good enough excuse not to go because they have other things on the menu. Like Sausage and Clams.
YUM!
All in all, my first foray into oysters was a smashing success. I loved the sweeter one so much that I had a craving for it the next day. So, who wants to meet me at Shuck?
